Liverpool told to showcase defensive nous against Newcastle United

The Reds have conceded 15 goals away from home in the Premier League this season. Nine in the last three games. Unbelievable and unwanted record for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp. The Reds’ last three visits to away venues have all resulted in losses, and by huge margins.

3-0 to Wolves, 3-0 to Brighton and 3-1 to Brentford, not a run of results that flatter Liverpool in the slightest. They have struggled to replicate the same level of performance on a regular basis and the upcoming away fixture against Newcastle United will require a different approach.

Even though their 2-0 win over Everton will give them a lot of confidence heading into the other games in the season, Newcastle pose a very different threat and are one of the strongest teams in the Premier League this season. They have only lost one game this season. Where? Liverpool at Anfield.

Former Red, John Aldridge spoke about how the Reds need to change the way they have been defending in away games this season and here is what he exclusively wrote in his column for Liverpool Echo:

“You can’t go to Newcastle and defend in the same way we have in recent away games, or we’re back to square one. We have got to go there, fight tooth and nail and pick them apart.”

The Reds have been playing their usual high-pressing and attacking style of football, but it has not been as effective away from home. They need to be more compact and disciplined in their defensive approach, especially against a team like Newcastle who will likely play a defensive and counter-attacking style of football.

Liverpool’s defenders need to be more alert and focused throughout the game, especially during set-pieces and counter-attacks. That has been a major problem for the Reds this season, especially against Brentford wherein Liverpool looked very weak defending a dead ball situation.

The players need to be organized and communicate effectively to avoid any lapses in concentration that could cost them the game as they have in our last three away games in the league this season.
