Barcelona enter race to sign Liverpool transfer target Mason Mount

Liverpool has been keeping a close eye on 24-year-old Mason Mount, who has been in exceptional form for Chelsea over the last few seasons. However, Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo) suggests that Barcelona has now joined Manchester United in the race to sign the young midfielder, leaving Liverpool with a tough decision to make.

Barcelona’s interest in the player is tough to understand given how they already have two of the best youngsters in the world playing at Camp Nou. Pedri and Gavi could potentially become the regen of Xavi and Andres Iniesta and it is difficult to see what Mount could bring to the table for the Catalan giants.

Having spoken about Barca already, Mount’s potential, versatility, and technical ability make him an excellent fit for Liverpool more than any other team, and his addition to the squad could provide some much-needed youth and energy to the team’s midfield.

Liverpool’s midfield has an ageing core, with players such as James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago all in their thirties. Mount’s arrival would add a fresh dimension to Liverpool’s midfield, providing the team with a player who can drive forward, create chances, and obviously score goals. He has 27 goals in the Premier League in addition to his 24 assists as well.

Mount to the Reds?

Furthermore, Mount’s work rate, discipline, and pressing abilities make him an ideal fit for Jurgen Klopp’s system, which relies heavily on a high press and intense work rate. Developing young players is something that Klopp’s coaching style is certainly well suited to. Mount could flourish under the German’s guidance.

This season, the negotiations regarding Mount’s contract have hit a roadblock. The reason for this issue is the player’s struggles to find his form at Chelsea, which has caused a significant stall in the discussions.

The player’s current contract stands set to expire in 2024 (Transfermarkt), and his lack of form has put his future at the club in doubt. While Barcelona’s interest in Mason Mount could make things more complicated for Liverpool, the Reds would still be the ideal fit for the young midfielder.
