Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Fabio Carvalho and his limited game-time
Liverpool FC’s summer signing, Fabio Carvalho, has been struggling to find game time in his first season with the club. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has shown glimpses of brilliance in his limited opportunities but has struggled to make an impact in the team due to the stiff competition for places in Liverpool’s midfield.
With the frequency of injuries to the first-team and inconsistent performances from the starting midfielders, it is tough to see why Carvalho has struggled to garner enough minutes as it is very uncharacteristic of Jurgen Klopp to deny youngsters their well-earned chances with the first team.
Carvalho joined from Fulham in the summer after impressing in the Championship, but he has found it difficult to break into Liverpool’s midfield. With the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Harvey Elliott and Naby Keita all vying for a place in the team, Carvalho has had to bide his time and wait for his chance.
It is just right we talk about him heading into the game against Newcastle. The Magpies have lost only one game in the entire season and that is to Liverpool thanks to Carvalho’s late 98th-minute winner.
Jurgen Klopp spoke about Fabio in his pre-match conference ahead of the visit to St. James’ Park and here is what the gaffer said via Liverpool Echo:
“He played well for us in a couple of games. The situation now is we have to make the squad & he couldn’t make it in the last few games… He did nothing wrong, He improved a lot, developed a lot.”
Fabio for the Reds
Honestly, Klopp doesn’t really sound very convincing when he says this. However, we have to understand that there are some decisions taken with the big picture in mind. Despite his lack of game time, Carvalho has shown that he is a top-class attacking midfielder with a bright future ahead of him.
He has a natural ability to find space and make clever runs, and he also possesses excellent technical skills and an eye for goal as we saw against Newcastle. In the limited minutes that he has played, Carvalho has already shown glimpses of the quality that made him such an exciting prospect at Fulham.
Liverpool fans are eager to see more of Carvalho in action, and there is no doubt that he has the potential to become a key player for the club in the future. However, it may take some time before he is able to establish himself in the starting lineup.
