In November 2022 Fenway Sports Group announced that they are prepared to sell the club setting the price at £4 billion.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, two prestigious financial firms, were retained by FSG to handle any potential sale.
According to reports, the club was initially inclined towards having a minority shareholder but may now have to alter their plans.
Reports indicate that a Qatari Group is interested in in deal, but only if FSG relinquish the majority control of the club.
FSG could still attract a minority investment with Americans investors Steve Pagliuca, a co-owner of the Boston Celtics, and Harris Blitzer, owner of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, interested in expanding their investment portfolios by adding the Premier League.
Although there haven’t been enough bids, we anticipate an influx of new offers in the coming months. A club of Liverpool’s stature cannot and will not stay on the market for much longer.
It feels like we may be witnessing the end for FSG at Liverpool FC, whose company acquired Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($343 million today), and under which the team has won both the Premier League and Champions League.
Although winning these titles was a huge achievement, it still feels like the FSG has not done enough. The group is well known for their notoriously pragmatic approach to spending from trading the one baseball’s best players
to cut costs for the Red Sox – their MLB Franchise, to being only the 8th highest spending club in the EPL over the past 5 years. This is super surprising considering that FSG saw 314 million Euros in profit in 2021 from Liverpool FC. And with the 2018 court decision which made online, retail, and mobile sports betting legal in the USA, and the subsequent 2023 legalization in MA (the state the Red Sox are based) FSG is expected to attempt and open a sportsbook next to Fenway Park, the home of the Red Sox, allowing them to add to the already record breaking profits they are racking up from the Red Sox.
Considering all the above, the sale of Liverpool FC seems like great news for the club’s supporters.
We hope the club will finally have more financial freedom to compete with the likes Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle.
So, when will Liverpool finally have new ownership? And who will these new owners be?
We shall find out very soon.
