“Will something happen?”- John W Henry spills the beans regarding Liverpool sale

John W Henry admits that Liverpool are not up for sale

In a question and answer session with the Boston Sports Journal (h/t The Metro), Liverpool principal owner John W Henry has revealed that the club is not for sale.

The Reds were thought to be on the market with several middle Eastern and American conglomerates said to be interested. However, FSG does not appear to be ready to relinquish control of one of the world’s most prestigious sporting institutions.

While FSG are unlikely to be around forever, their association with the club is unlikely to end anytime soon. However, they are in talks with parties regarding further investment.

“Will we be in England forever? No. Are we selling LFC? No. Are we talking with investors about LFC? Yes”

The aim appears to be to inject cash into the organization without relinquishing the controlling stake. Henry believes they are closing in on just such an agreement but it falls well short of a sale.

“Will something happen there? I believe so, but it won’t be a sale”

FSG, then known as NESV took over the club from Gillet and Hicks in 2010, just moments before the club looked set to enter administration. They have since seen their £300m investment skyrocket and is now worth over ten times that amount.

FSG’s stewardship of the club is a mixed one with both sides of the coin being extra clear. While the appointment of Jurgen Klopp and the success that followed is a chip on their shoulder, the lack of investment and decisions such as raising ticket prices and joining the Super League have been met with vehemence.

Now that FSG are here to stay, questions need to be asked about the backroom changes that are taking place at the club. Whether Henry is just playing down any rumours or the club is looking at a new direction forward remains to be seen.

It is no secret that Liverpool need massive investment in the playing squad next summer. FSG’s reputation will certainly face the litmus test as we seek to avoid losing our spot at the top table of English and European football. While they have our thanks for rescuing us in 2010, a lack of ambition in the summer will largely impact their legacy at Anfield in an adverse manner.
