Jordan Henderson captained Liverpool to one of their most humiliating results in history when they were embarrassed by Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds raced to a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. What followed next was a result that will never be forgotten by fans of both teams.

Vinicius Junior scored twice to send the two teams to the dressing room at half-time with the score at 2-2. A silly foul resulted in a Real Madrid free kick close to our box.

Luka Modric’s ball into the box caught our defence sleeping. The zonal marking clearly didn’t work as Eder Militao easily lost Joe Gomez in the box and scored a header to make it 3-0 very early in the second half.

That is the moment when the game went away from the Merseyside giants, according to Henderson. Speaking in an interview after the full-time whistle at L4, the England international told BT Sport (h/t BBC):

“It’s a tough one to take in the end. We still played a good first half. We were on top and created some good chances. There was a good chance at 2-0, a scuffle on the line. If that goes in it’s a big moment.

“The second goal obviously is a mistake. The third we’ll be disappointed with. That’s when the game went away from us. It’s [the second leg] still a few weeks away. We have to move on quickly.

“We have Premier League games before then so we have to concentrate on that, and cross this bridge when we come to it.”

We’ve been written off before, but this time, it feels like there really is no way back from this. Henderson was one of the players who disappointed, once again, in midfield. Fabinho and Joe Gomez were evidently tragic.

This team looks beaten the moment they go down. It is laughable how we have come to a point where we have gone from quadruple contenders to ending a season without a trophy. Of course, there is still a mathematical possibility that we win the UCL – but it will have to take a massive comeback at the Santiago Bernabeu on 15 March to go into the last eight.
