Transfer News: Liverpool ‘monitoring’ PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe
Reports linking Liverpool with French superstar Kylian Mbappe have been making the rounds again. According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Reds are monitoring the situation of the ‘long-term’ target amid uncertainty over his future at PSG.
However, signing a player of Mbappe’s calibre may not be the best move for Liverpool at the moment. Having said that, even though it is not the “best move” for the Reds, that certainly doesn’t mean we can afford him by any means.
The 24-year-old is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after footballers in the world. His incredible goal-scoring ability and creative play make him a highly valuable asset to any team. However, with two years left on his contract at PSG (Transfermarkt), the financial implications of such a move would be huge, which is something Liverpool will need to consider carefully.
Even if we have the financials to carry out this deal, do we need him is the actual question that could arise. Liverpool’s attack is already highly potent with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo leading the line.
And this is not even mentioning the other four options in attack we have. The Reds certainly do not need another forward at this stage, let alone one as expensive as Mbappe.
Instead, Liverpool should focus on strengthening other areas of the team where they are lacking depth. Furthermore, it is important to consider the impact that Mbappe’s signing would have on the team’s wage structure.
Liverpool operate on a sensible wage budget, and adding a high-earning player like Mbappe could upset the team’s balance. The financial implications of such a move would also make it difficult for Liverpool to make any further signings in the future as we also have the potential transfer-record breaker Jude Bellingham on our radar as well.
