Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is being considered as a major high-profile name to become Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) new manager if Christophe Galtier is relieved of his duties.
This is according to the Scottish Daily Express (h/t Liverpool.com), which claims that Les Parisiens are becoming frustrated with Galtier despite his team’s five-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
It would be a surprise if they let the Frenchman go so soon considering he was hired as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement just last summer. UEFA Champions League glory has been a marker of success for their managers.
Thomas Tuchel reached the final of the competition only to lose to Bayern Munich and he was later shown the door. It is hard to pin down just how PSG go about hiring and firing its managers.
Gerrard’s name is certainly one that would raise eyebrows both in France and England. He has won the league with Rangers but his time at Aston Villa was hardly impressive, as he was sacked in October 2022 after a string of poor results.
Coincidentally, former PSG boss Unai Emery has become his successor at Villa Park. Gerrard is an icon at Liverpool and his name has become synonymous with the name of the city itself.
This is a reason why he has been touted as a potential replacement or successor for manager Jurgen Klopp. It seems more like fantasy rather than reality at this point, but our fans would want him to be an option for us in the future if Klopp were to leave prematurely.
He is yet to earn his stripes with a top, top club but as shown by the examples of Zinedine Zidane, Mikel Arteta, and Pep Guardiola (Barcelona), sometimes it helps a club to take a leap of faith with a budding manager who played for the club in the past.
If Gerrard was to move to the Parc des Princes, he will know that Liverpool fans will be closely following his progress there. It could be a very daunting task not just for him, but for any manager, but at least it could prepare him for the trials and tribulations of becoming an elite manager.
