Steven Gerrard makes brutal Liverpool claim after Real Madrid domination
To visit the last time Liverpool got the better of Real Madrid, we have to travel back to the 2009 UCL Round of 16 when Steven Gerrard scored two goals apart from Fernando Torres and Andrea Dossena scoring one each as well. After that 4-0 win more than a decade ago, the Reds are yet to beat Los Blancos.
Fast forward to the present day, the Reds are still in shock after Real Madrid beat us 5-2 at Anfield. Vinicius Jr. and his teammates completely outclassed Jurgen Klopp’s side in every department of the game, and the scoreline accurately represents the bullying they subjected us to.
The last Liverpool captain to win a game against Real Madrid had to comment on what was on show on Tuesday night at Merseyside. Gerrard spoke of how the visitors gave us a harsh ‘reality check’ and that assessment of the situation is pretty much as precise as it could get.

“Sometimes in football you’ve got to hold your hands up and say the best team won. Liverpool were outclassed, Liverpool were dominated, they (Real Madrid) were better in most areas of the pitch, you’d have to say.”
The loss has highlighted the areas where Liverpool needs to improve. One of the main issues was their defence, which was vulnerable to counter-attacks and struggled to contain the pace of Real Madrid’s forwards. The team’s midfield also struggled to control the game and create scoring opportunities for the forwards apart from the opening 20 minutes.
The better team won
Liverpool must learn from their mistakes and approach the remaining games of the season with a stronger and more determined mindset. The loss can certainly serve as a valuable lesson and a source of motivation for the players to bounce back and perform at their best in future matches.
In addition to the technical aspects of the game, Liverpool must also address their mental approach to matches. They cannot allow themselves to become complacent or underestimate their opponents which was probably what happened after we scored the two early goals.
