Blow for Liverpool as PL star prepares to extend current contract in London

Bukayo Saka set to sign new Arsenal contract amidst Liverpool links

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is set to sign a new contract and extend his stay in North London amidst links to Liverpool, according to The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror].

The 21-year-old’s existing deal with the Gunner is set to expire in the summer of 2024 after they recently triggered a one-year extension clause. However, the England international is expected to put pen to paper to a long-term contract.

While Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with the forward, it may take some time for the two parties to formally sit down and make things official.

Last summer, the Reds were lining up a move for Saka. Jurgen Klopp was keen on acquiring the services of the 21-year-old. Premier League rivals Manchester City and Italian giants Juventus were also eyeing the forward’s signature.

The England international made his way through the youth ranks with the Gunners. In the 2019/20 season, the youngster broke into the North London side’s senior squad.

Initially, Saka was deployed as a left-back at Arsenal. However, over the years, the 21-year-old has developed into a quality winger. In the current campaign, he has been the Emirates Stadium side’s talisman.

Arteta’s team are currently flying high in the English top flight. The Gunners are at the top of the league table. The England international has featured 23 times for the North London side in the PL, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists.

At the moment, Liverpool have an abundance of talent in the forward line. The right-wing is occupied by Mohamed Salah. In the summer of 2022, we signed Darwin Nunez from SL Benfica. Last month, the Red bought Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

Jurgen Klopp can also call upon the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino. Therefore, while Saka is a quality player, for now, the Merseysiders have enough depth in the attack.
