According to A Spor (h/t Liverpool Echo), Turkish giants Fenerbahce are eyeing up a £7m move to sign Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
The report states that due to Thiago’s contract situation at Anfield, they could make use of that and plot a low-cost move in the coming summer window. The former Bayern Munich midfielder has his current contract expiring in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt
).The 31-year-old, who arrived at Liverpool in 2020 after winning the Champions League, has had a stop-start career in a Red shirt. Although he has been one of the best midfielders in the team, his inconsistent availability due to injuries is a massive bane.
Thiago has missed 50 games and counting for the Reds since making his debut in September 2020. He is currently out injured as well and will take some time before returning.
We know that Liverpool are set for a midfield reshuffle in the coming summer. The average age of that department has risen and it is evident in the lack of intensity to close people down.
Knowing that Thiago is a key player whenever fit, is it worth taking a risk by offering him a new deal and building a new midfield around his experience? One would think so. Although we cannot rely on him playing 40+ games a season, he is definitely good enough to play 30 and do well in 25 of them.
So, it would be better to keep hold of the 31-year-old beyond this summer rather than selling him for a low fee. His experience and leadership could come in handy.
Moreover, with younger and fresher legs around him in midfield, we can the controlled version of Thiago, where he dictates games from the quarterback position with relentless passing and excellent control of the space.
