Liverpool want Leicester City star Youri Tielemans on a free transfer
Quite a while since Youri Tielemans has been linked with a move to Liverpool. Given the extensive reports from a season or two ago, one would believe that Tielemans was surely on his way to Merseyside. However, the latest reports from FBRef via Liverpool Echo discuss a potential move for the 25-year-old Belgian. The report also talks about how the Reds want him on a Bosman transfer.
Tielemans has been a key player for Leicester City since joining in 2019. He has scored four goals and provided an assist in 29 appearances across all competitions this season, playing an important role in the Foxes’ squad. Despite his contribution, Tielemans has not received an improved contract since joining the club, with reports suggesting that he earns £35,000 per week. His deal at the Midlands outfit expires in June later this year (Transfermarkt).
Liverpool’s interest in Tielemans is understandable because of his performances for the Foxes. The Belgian international is an excellent passer of the ball, with an accuracy rate of 82.4% in the Premier League. He is also a hard-working midfielder, contributing defensively with an average of 2.72 tackles and 0.89 interceptions per 90. All stats from FBRef.
Liverpool, with a very injury-prone squad, could benefit from Tielemans’ versatility and energy. The Reds will need to move quickly if they want to secure Tielemans’ signature. They have a strong squad, but injuries have exposed their lack of depth in midfield.
Could Youri move to Liverpool?
Tielemans could provide a much-needed boost to their options, and his age and experience could make him a valuable long-term addition to the squad. However, it is important to note that we are not the only team in the reckoning for him as Arsenal, Barcelona and even Newcastle United want the Belgian international.
With his contract running down, he will be able to negotiate a better deal elsewhere. The player is presently recovering from ankle ligament damage, and could potentially sit out for up to six weeks as per manager Brendan Rodgers’ statement to Sky Sports.
Given the high asking prices of their primary transfer targets like Jude Bellingham, it will be wise of Liverpool to look for affordable alternatives to their more expensive targets, and Tielemans could fit the bill almost perfectly as he would be available for free.
But as earlier mentioned, Liverpool will need to compete with other interested parties, including Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Barcelona in the race to secure his signature.

There is absolutely no doubt that Tielemans could prove to be a wonderful purchase as we have had our fair share of luck with free agents. Joel Matip, James Milner and possibly, Youri Tielemans to that list as well, and we could have something special brewing in the midfield for Liverpool in the coming years.
The Belgian played a key role in Leicester’s run to the 2021 FA Cup glory. He scored the winner in the final against Chelsea and will augur well for the Reds who are keen to compete in cup finals for many years to come.
