AC Milan and Atletico Madrid track Liverpool goalie Marcelo Pitaluga
Liverpool goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga has caught the attention of both AC Milan and Atletico Madrid, according to recent reports. The Brazilian shot-stopper joined Liverpool in 2020 from Fluminense but has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Reds.
However, his performances for non-league Macclesfield during a loan spell earlier this season caught the eye of the two European giants. Despite suffering an ankle ligament injury during his loan spell at Macclesfield, Pitaluga has returned to Liverpool and is continuing to train with the first-team.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper’s potential has not gone unnoticed, with AC Milan and Atletico Madrid both sending scouts to watch him in action during Liverpool’s win over Arsenal at U21 level. Football Insider via Liverpool Echo talk about how these two clubs share an interest in the Brazil U17 shotstopper.
For the Reds’ U21 side, Pitaluga has five clean sheets in 27 appearances. He has already represented Brazil at the U17 level and was part of the squad that won the FIFA U17 World Cup in 2019.
Pitaluga for the Reds
Pitaluga’s arrival at Liverpool was a coup at the time, and his performances for Macclesfield have only served to enhance his reputation. For Liverpool, the interest from AC Milan and Atletico Madrid will no doubt be a cause for concern.
The Reds have a long history of producing top-class goalkeepers, and Pitaluga could stand as one for the future. With his countryman Alisson firmly holding his position between the sticks right now for Liverpool, Pitaluga might have to wait for his chance.
However, back in December, the Reds’ second-choice shot-stopper in Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher spoke to Liverpool Echo about how he would be open to a move if it came his way. In that case, Pitaluga could be in the midst of things sooner than later.
Kelleher’s contract runs out in 2026 (Transfermarkt) and given his openness to moving, the Reds could rather cash in on the player and utilise those funds to strengthen another department of their squad and give Pitaluga a try-out at the second-choice keeper.
