Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst seen touching the This is Anfield Sign

According to Liverpool Echo, Manchester United forward Wout Weghorst was seen touching the famous ‘This is Anfield’ sign at Liverpool before being on the losing side of one of the worst defeats in Manchester United’s history.

This is Anfield is one of the most iconic signs in England and attaches a certain relevance to it considering the rich history of the club. While it is common for the Reds to touch it on the way out, it is rather unusual, especially for a Man United star to do the same.

Jurgen Klopp when he joined Liverpool from Borussia Dortmund made it a point that no player of his team touches the sign unless the team has done something achievable to be worthy of touching the sign.

Hence, it was rather surprising to see an opposition player taking in the moment at Anfield and all the more important considering the thumping received by United once the game ended.

However, dating back to an interview in 2018 as covered by De Telegraaf via Goal.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Weghorst actually had admitted his dream to play for Liverpool.

“I’ve dreamt of [playing for Liverpool] since childhood. If I continue to train with full commitment, I think that opportunity will come.

“Of course, something like that depends on several factors. You have to stay fit and a coach and club must see it in you, but apart from that you can create many things in life for yourself.”

Liverpool and United are considered the fiercest rivals in English football and it will e difficult for Weghorst to keep things on the low. His explanation after the game will do little to fray tempers either.

Although joining United on a straight loan deal, it would be almost impossible to see Weghorst ever donning the famous Red jersey at Anfield. Considering his performances have also not been up to the standard since joining United, the player’s dream of representing is something that is very far from fruition.

United’s lack of forward options are in direct contrast to the wealth of options available to us in our attacking department.

With Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo getting used to the rigour of English football with the ability and experience of Mohamed Salah, it is a linkup which is very exciting for a Liverpool supporter.

More Liverpool News:

Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are also in the ranks and hence with some shrewd signings in the summer, the blip of this season would be a far-fetched memory.

The team under Klopp is capable of reaching the high levels again with the right recruitment and a top-four finish and securing UEFA Champions League qualification would really help us achieve the objectives quickly.
