RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol is on Liverpool summer transfer list
Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a potential move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, with the 21-year-old Croatian among the club’s list of transfer targets. Gvardiol, who raised his reputation with a strong performance in the World Cup, has been attracting interest from several top European clubs, including Liverpool.
According to reports from Sky Germany, Liverpool are keen to secure the services of the talented young defender, but as of yet, no negotiations have taken place. With Gvardiol’s release clause worth £98m set to become active from the summer of 2024, Liverpool may look to make a move for him before then if they feel he is the right player to bolster their backline.
Gvardiol has established himself as a key player for RB Leipzig this season, impressing with his defensive capabilities as well as his ability to contribute to the attack. He has also shown his versatility by playing both as a centre-back and as a left-back.
If Liverpool were to secure the services of Gvardiol, he would add some much-needed depth and quality to the Reds’ defensive line, which has struggled at times this season due to injuries and a lack of form. His speed and physicality would also make him a valuable addition to the team, and he could form a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk too.
Josko to the Reds?
With growing concerns over Ibrahima Konate’s injury record, Joe Gomez’s form and Joel Matip’s future at the club, it would be wise of the Reds to have a look into the transfer market and see which players could make a significant impact at Anfield.
However, the fact that Gvardiol’s release clause is set to become active in 2024 could pose a challenge for Liverpool, as they may have to pay a hefty fee to secure his services. Nevertheless, the club’s recent success in the transfer market, as well as their reputation as one of the top clubs in Europe, could give them an advantage in the race for Gvardiol.
While there is no doubt that Gvardiol is a top talent, his steep price tag could mean that the Reds would have to look elsewhere as they also need the funds to strengthen their midfield for the coming years which could cost them a bomb.
But if Liverpool can convince him to make the move to Anfield, and magically, for an affordable price, it could prove to be a smart move for the club, as they look to build a team capable of challenging for more honours in the coming years.
