Marcus Rashford calls out “nonsense” that Manchester United gave up against Liverpool

As quoted by Sky Sports, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has rubbished the claims that the Red Devils gave up against Liverpool on Sunday.

Liverpool smashed United 7-0 at Anfield and there was a general consensus that Erik ten Hag’s men just gave up and stopped running after the Reds scored the third goal.

The majority of the brunt was aimed at United’s captain Bruno Fernandes, who did everything a captain should not do in an away game when things are not going right. He was lucky to be even booked throughout the 90 minutes.

Responding to the claims, here’s what Rashford said (h/t Sky Sports):

“I don’t have anything negative to say about Bruno. As the manager said, nobody is perfect and sometimes you want to win so bad you end up doing things that are a little bit out of character.

“We didn’t give up [at Anfield]. That’s nonsense. We were unorganised, yeah, communication was bad and that’s why we conceded the goals.”

It is a shame that despite Liverpool playing so well to smash their arch-rivals by seven goals, all the talks have been about how bad United were. The lack of coverage towards a great performance from Jurgen Klopp’s men needs to be highlighted.

For us, the focus should be to back the monumental result with wins in the coming games. The next game is away at Bournemouth on Saturday.

After that comes the second leg of the Real Madrid tie at the Bernabeu. Although Liverpool are three goals down, the minimum they can do is win the second leg and continue with the good form.

We are only three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, with a game in hand. What that seven-goal win did is improved our goal difference compared to Spurs and Newcastle United (teams on either side of us).

So, if things are tight come to the end of this season, having a better goal difference can count as a point. When we lost to Wolves last month, these things did not look possible. It is a credit to Klopp and the players for this turnaround.
