Former PL star, now pundit lays into ‘overrated’ Liverpool superstar

Ex-Chelsea hero Jason Cundy calls Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk overrated

Following Liverpool FC’s unexpected 1-0 loss to Bournemouth away from home in the league recently, former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy lashed at Virgil van Dijk. That is following the Dutchman’s casual defending which led to the goal the Cherries scored past us.

Van Dijk’s defending was far from impressive during Philip Billing’s goal, as he allowed Dango Outtara to effortlessly move past him on the right-hand side and cross the ball into the box. The Dutchman’s defensive efforts lacked vigour as Billing was able to score without any opposition in a vast space.

This isn’t something new though. Virgil, often after his return from his major ACL injury has not been on the same level as he was before. Even though it is understandable that the player will find it tough to do what he did before, as a Liverpool starter, and virtual captain, he could certainly do a lot better than what he has been.

Having said that, here is what Cundy said about him via The Mirror:

“I can’t quite put my finger on it but once he gets away from him on the right-hand side, he seems to stop and misjudge the situation. People compare him to John Terry and Rio Ferdinand but he cannot lace their boots.”

Tough times for Van Dijk

Despite these inconsistencies, van Dijk remains one of the best defenders in the world and the best defender at Liverpool. His leadership and defensive abilities are essential to Liverpool’s success, and his absence was felt during his injury layoff.

It is crucial that Liverpool manages van Dijk’s return to form effectively, as they will need him at his best if they are to challenge for silverware in the coming years. Klopp and his coaching staff are likely to work closely with the defender to help him rediscover his best form and confidence. Even though the injury was quite a while ago, it still seems to have its effects on Virg and the Reds should find a way to eliminate that threat.

As a central defender, he often has to organize the backline, communicate with his teammates, and make split-second decisions in high-pressure situations. These tasks require a great deal of mental and physical stamina, and even the best defenders in the world can make mistakes.

In the end, while van Dijk may have cost Liverpool a goal or two due to his inconsistencies after his ACL injury, he remains a vital player for the team. With time, patience, and hard work, he is likely to return to his best form.

To conclude, while van Dijk may have had a few moments of vulnerability since his injury, his importance to Liverpool’s success cannot be understated. He remains the best defender at the club, and his leadership qualities and defensive abilities are crucial to the team’s success.
