Liverpool long-term admirers of Bundesliga defender as he weighs up future plans

Liverpool are very interested RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol

According to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, Liverpool have been tracking Croatian centre-back Josko Gvardiol for quite some time now and view him as an ideal reinforcement for the defence.

Gvardiol has been turning heads with his performances for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and his impressive showing at the World Cup in Qatar has only served to enhance his reputation further.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a host of top clubs, including Premier League giants Manchester City and Chelsea, as well as Real Madrid in La Liga. However, Gvardiol has spoken of his admiration for Liverpool, and if the Merseyside outfit can secure his services, it would be a significant coup for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

After a disappointing season that has seen Liverpool fall off the pace in the Premier League, Klopp will be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer. Defence is an area that is crying out for reinforcements.

Gvardiol could be an ideal addition to the Reds’ defensive ranks, with his ability to play both centre-back and left-back making him a versatile option for Klopp. Moreover, Gvardiol’s presence would provide much-needed competition for Liverpool’s current crop of defenders.

Of course, signing Gvardiol would not come cheap, with the defender’s release clause set at just under £100 million. However, if Liverpool can secure his services, it could prove to be a shrewd investment in the long run.

Speaking about his future to UEFA, the talented central defender did admit that he would weigh up his options in the future.

“Ambitions? Well, I don’t really know. I’m here right now and we have a lot of work to do; there’s the Bundesliga and we’re also playing in the Champions League and competing in the [German Cup]. So, it’s important for me to be as successful as possible this season, and then when the season is over, I can think about what and how to proceed”

Ultimately, it will come down to whether Liverpool are willing to splash the cash on a player who has a tremendous ceiling and has shown his abilities on the biggest stage – the World Cup in Qatar.

Let’s see where Gvardiol eventually ends up. It would be great if it was Liverpool but things don’t come easily in football. Only time will tell how this ends up.
