Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in Boca Juniors star Alan Varela

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool and Newcastle United are interested in signing Boca Juniors midfielder Alan Varela.

The report states that there are a host of clubs across Europe that are keeping a close eye on the 21-year-old. Liverpool sent their scouts to Argentina to watch the player and have been impressed by him.

Among the European clubs interested in buying Varela is Benfica. The Portuguese side made an astronomical profit by selling Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea in January. They need a midfield addition in the summer.

The same can be said about Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp aims to reshuffle the pack in midfield after the end of this season.

Talking about Varela, he has been a Boca Juniors player since 2018, initially in the youth team and then making his senior debut in 2021.

He is a defensive midfielder who can operate as a central midfielder if required. In the current season in Argentina, which began in January, the 21-year-old has played all of his eight games as a defensive midfielder.

Varela is a physically strong player who reads the game well, doesn’t shy away from making tackles, is a good passer of the ball and does have the pace to match up with the fast forwards in defensive situations.

We know that Liverpool need multiple additions to their midfield department very soon. They haven’t done much shopping in the South American market in the recent past. The players from that continent have only been signed after they have spent some time in a European club.

Varela has the quality to be trusted for the Reds to sign him directly from Boca Juniors. Granted that he may take some time to settle down in England. But, at 21, he has the time and room to develop his game under the management of Jurgen Klopp.
