Borussia Monchengladbach’s French striker Marcus Thuram reportedly wants a move away from the Bundesliga side. The player was subject to transfer interest from Liverpool in the past as well, and given how Roberto Firmino will leave the club at the end of the campaign, the 25-year-old seems like a legit replacement for the Brazilian.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg posted about Thuram’s intent to move on from Die Fohlen via Twitter. The Frenchman has been in tremendous form this season for the club, scoring 14 goals in addition to his four assists from only 25 appearances across all competitions.
However, he might feel that this is just the time for him to take the next big step and that is where the Reds could come into the picture. There have always been plenty of great strikers at Liverpool, and Thuram could certainly be one of them as well.
The tweet also mentions how Bayern Munich have stalled their interest in the player, somewhat clearing the path for Liverpool in case the Reds wish to add to their attack.
Having said that, attacking depth should be the least of concerns for Jurgen Klopp’s side at the moment. Apart from what one could imagine the starting trio in a fully fit Liverpool side that includes Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, the Reds have a lot of bench strength in that department as well.
Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are extremely capable footballers and youngsters like Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are also up and coming in that department.
However, we have to keep in mind that Thuram would intend to move to a club where he could be among the starters. That is certainly not something the Reds could offer him at the moment. With so many options available, Thuram does not necessarily stand out.
That is certainly not denying the great talent Thuram is but given his personal interests, Liverpool do not seem to be the right fit for the player, who could ply his trade elsewhere much more effectively.
The soon-to-be-free agent will certainly not be short of options come the summer. Hopefully, he gets to a team wherein he can start week in, and week out and showcase the world-class talent he has. As far as Liverpool are concerned, we need midfielders, someone like Jude Bellingham.
