Michael Owen opens up on Liverpool midfield rejig next summer
Liverpool FC’s recent defeat at the hands of Real Madrid has certainly highlighted the need for a midfield reshuffle at the club. The Reds suffered a 1-0 loss in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against the Spanish giants, resulting in a 6-2 aggregate defeat.
The loss has obviously emphasised the need for Liverpool to strengthen their midfield and sign ideal transfer targets, including the highly-rated Jude Bellingham. Liverpool’s midfield has been a subject of scrutiny this season, with injuries to key players and a lack of depth exposing the team’s vulnerabilities.
Against Madrid, the midfield struggled to create chances and failed to dominate possession, leaving the attackers isolated and unable to score. The loss has certainly underlined the necessity for a midfield reshuffle, with Jurgen Klopp needing to bring in new players who can add creativity and dynamism to the team.
BT Sport Pundit and former Liverpool star Michael Owen talked about how it would be daft of Jurgen Klopp not to invest in midfielders after this show, and here is what he said via Liverpool Echo when prompted by Rio Ferdinand on whether the Reds could sign midfielders:
“Do you think Jurgen Klopp’s stupid? He’s going to absolutely do that. If there was a transfer window now he’d be going and doing it. He’s desperate to do it.”
New midfielders are a must!
The need for a midfield reshuffle has become more evident than ever, with the Liverpool midfield lacking creativity and dynamism. The midfield needs players who can take on defenders, create chances, and control possession.
Liverpool has already been linked with several midfield targets, including Chelsea’s Mason Mount, Declan Rice of West Ham, and obviously, the highly-rated Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund. Klopp is keen to bring in players who can add depth and quality to the midfield and provide competition for the existing players.
The Liverpool manager is aware of the importance of having a strong midfield and is eager to strengthen the team’s options during the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool’s loss to Real Madrid has emphasised the need for a midfield reshuffle, but it’s not just about signing new players. Klopp needs to find a way to get the best out of his existing midfielders and utilise their strengths. And that is where we are lacking. Injuries are a major problem for the Reds this season.
