“Game got harder”- Jurgen Klopp sheds light on puzzling double substitution vs Real Madrid

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp explains Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota substitution decision

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faced criticism for his decision to substitute attacking duo Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez in the 57th minute of their crucial Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid.

The Reds eventually succumbed to a 1-0 defeat, losing 6-2 on aggregate over two legs. However, Klopp has since defended his decision, explaining the reasoning behind his tactical substitutions.

Speaking after the game, Klopp revealed that Jota’s substitution was a precautionary measure due to the player’s recent return from a long-term injury. The Portuguese forward stood sidelined for several months with a knee problem and Klopp was not willing to risk his fitness by playing him for too long.

Explaining his decision to make those changes, here is what manager Jurgen Klopp had to say via Liverpool Echo:

“For Diogo it was clear he shouldn’t play extremely long as he is still coming back from a long, long injury and you could see the game got harder for him. He made some fouls as he was coming late, so no risk for him.”

“Darwin looked like he was not at the absolute top level as well and we needed to defend that side as well. We could change and we wanted to mix things up a bit.”

Surprising substitutions against Real

Jota had made some late challenges during the game, indicating that he was beginning to tire and needed replacement. Klopp’s decision to replace Nunez was also based on the player’s fitness levels.

The Uruguayan striker had not been performing at his usual high standards and did not seem to be at his peak physical level. Klopp felt that it was necessary to defend that side of the pitch and opted to make a tactical substitution to strengthen his team’s defensive capabilities.

The decision to withdraw both attacking players at the same time was criticised by some Liverpool fans, who felt that the move was overly cautious and negatively impacted their team’s chances of making a comeback.

However, Klopp defended his actions, emphasising that he wanted to “mix things up a bit” and give his team a chance to get back into the game. Liverpool has had a difficult season, with numerous injuries to key players and a lack of consistency in their performances.
