Charlie Adam says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is ‘too loyal’ to some players

Recent weeks have seen many questions raised about Jurgen Klopp and his team selection. Accusations of him being ‘too loyal’ to some of the players often pop up on Twitter, and even former Liverpool star Charlie Adam resonates with this train of thought.

It is very tough to experiment with a starting XI when the club is already short of depth, and the bench options do not have enough experience at the biggest stage as well. However, one could say that giving youngsters the opportunity to play is the only way for them to gain experience.

Klopp’s squad has had an underwhelming season, leading to expectations of sweeping changes in the summer, especially in midfield. Adam thinks Klopp should follow Manchester City’s example and be more ruthless in changing the squad. Recently, Pep Guardiola ousted first-team superstar Joao Cancelo on loan as he was not fitting the plans for the season.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live via Liverpool Echo, here is what Adam said about the German being too loyal to some of his players:

“I think Jurgen Klopp has been a little too loyal to these players, especially when you look at what Pep Guardiola has done with the likes of Joao Cancelo and moving players on to bring others in. But I think as a manager you also have to respect what the players have done for you and those are decisions that have to be made by the staff.”

Is Klopp too loyal to a bunch?

From a personal perspective, even though Klopp has to take some blame for the situation we are in, he has to stay loyal to a good chunk of players as we do not have any other options in those positions. Of course, frequent injury issues with the player do not help the manager one bit.

It again comes down to investment and the owners backing the former Dortmund manager. In the summer window of 2023, FSG certainly need to rethink their stance on being so frugal in their spending habits and give Klopp the freedom and money his work at Liverpool over these years rightfully deserves.

In any case, there is nobody better than Klopp to manage the Reds out of this mess. He is the longest-serving manager in the league. In contrast, Mourinho has been sacked by three PL clubs since Klopp joined Liverpool.

Arsenal, Chelsea, and United have also had multiple managers but none of them have won the PL since Pep Guardiola won his first with Manchester City. For Klopp to turn things around, his billionaire owners need to invest properly.

The thought of Klopp being too loyal to a bunch is due to the fact that there isn’t enough quality in the depth of the squad. He has no option but to run a similar line-up for the nth time in the season. Hopefully, that changes next summer onwards.
