Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk wants the club to do their job by signing quality players
As quoted by The Athletic (subscription required), Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has made it clear that the club needs to do their job of signing quality players in the summer window.
The Dutchman reiterated that it is important for the team to qualify for Champions League football next season, as it would help in attracting some of the top players in the world.
After going out of that competition without laying a glove on Real Madrid on Wednesday, Liverpool have 12 league games remaining in this season to salvage something and finished fourth. Even that looks tough because of the competition around them.
Here’s what van Dijk said about signing new players and the importance of finishing fourth (h/t The Athletic):
“Obviously, players are going to leave. That’s been announced so if we want to be where we have been the last five years, we need quality imports, especially with those players leaving.
“Everyone knows that’s going to be very difficult. It is going to be very difficult to find the right players but the club has to do their job in this case.
“We still have a lot of games to play and we want to be in the Champions League. I think that will also help to attract the best players in the world. Not all the time but it will definitely help.”
When a player says this, it is clear that everyone in the squad has similar feelings. It also shows how necessary it is for Liverpool to get the coming summer transfer window right.
With how tight the spending has been despite all the successes in the last few years, the owners must realise that the time has come for them to back the manager and help the existing squad players with good money for buying top players.
We cannot settle for compromised versions now, irrespective of finishing fourth in the table or not. If finances become an issue in not being able to complete a move, the owners won’t be spared by the fans.

For attracting the best players’ sake, let’s hope that we finish fourth and take the momentum into next season. The good thing is that there is no international tournament or shortened pre-season this summer. Hence, the players will be fresher next season compared to the start of this.
