Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson ‘unable to train properly’ with England
England won their first game of the Euro 2024 Qualifiers against Italy away from home giving The Three Lions their first win against Gli Azzurri in their own backyard in over 61 years. However, the only Liverpool representative in the squad, Jordan Henderson remained uninvolved in the game.
Hendo missed out on featuring against Real Madrid away from home due to illness which also restricted his appearance against Bournemouth as only a substitute. There is still one more game to go in this international break, and hopefully, Hendo could face Ukraine.
England manager Gareth Southgate revealed that Henderson has been struggling with fitness issues and has not been able to train properly. If all goes well, Hendo could just return in time to face Manchester City in the Premier League game on 1st April. With little squad depth, Hendo’s presence in the midfield could go a long way in helping the Reds.
Speaking to Channel 4 (h/t Liverpool Echo) after the match against Italy, here is what Southgate said on Henderson’s current injury situation:
“Jordan was a big part of the World Cup but has not been able to train fully, so we’re keeping him back.”
Henderson injury blow?
It’s clear that the England boss is taking a cautious approach with Henderson, given his importance to both Liverpool and the national team. The Reds will need their captain at full fitness for the crucial fixture against Pep Guardiola’s side, as they look to close the gap and secure a top-four finish.
While Henderson’s absence is a blow for Liverpool and England, it’s important to take a long-term view and ensure that he is fully fit and ready to play when he returns. With important matches coming thick and fast, it’s vital that he’s not rushed back too soon and is given the time he needs to recover fully.
Obviously, Liverpool fans will be disappointed to see their captain sidelined once again, but we will take comfort in the knowledge that the club and national team are taking a cautious approach to his recovery. With important matches on the horizon, it’s important to ensure that Henderson stands fully fit and ready to play before he comes back into the fray.
The Reds have already had plenty of injury issues this season and we certainly do not need any more of these issues which could derail our chances of finishing in the top four this season, which already look pretty slim.
