Liverpool are interested in Torino defender Perr Schuurs
Liverpool Football Club are showing interest in bringing Torino defender Perr Schuurs to Anfield. The 23-year-old Dutchman has been impressive in Serie A and has caught the attention of several top clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Paris Saint Germain.
According to Italian outlet Tuttosport via liverpool.com, the Reds stand as “frontrunners” among this list of clubs interested in bringing the Dutchman away from Serie A. The source quotes £43m to secure his services. The Reds’ defensive issues this season, coupled with the poor form of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, means that bringing in new blood into the backline could be a good idea.
Schuurs has been in tremendous form for Torino this season, and at just 23 years old, he has many years of top-level football ahead of him. The Dutchman has shown great composure on the ball and is comfortable playing out from the back, a trait that would certainly fit in well with Liverpool’s playing style.
Of course, any move for Schuurs would not make sense until one of Gomez or Matip is sold. Liverpool already has a crowded backline, and adding another defender to the mix could create even more competition for places.
Schuurs to the Reds?
Liverpool’s recent defensive struggles stand well-documented, and bringing in a player like Schuurs could help shore up the backline. The 23-year-old would bring a new dimension to Liverpool’s defence, and his ability on the ball would obviously make him a valuable asset in the team’s buildup play.
The Dutchman’s contract at the Serie A side lasts until 2026 (Transfermarkt) and that is one of the reasons why he costs so much now. Schuurs is strong, athletic, and a good reader of the game and all of these reasons could certainly play a significant role in whether or not he signs with the Reds.
Moreover, with Virgil van Dijk also getting older by the day, it only makes sense for Liverpool to look for long-term replacements for him, who could partner Ibrahima Konate in the days to come for the Merseysiders.
However, the cost of signing the defender may prove to be a problem, and it would not make sense for Liverpool to sign Schuurs until they have offloaded one of their current centre-backs as earlier mentioned.
