Liverpool summer revamp: Only 14 players have a ‘guaranteed’ future at Anfield
The summer of 2023 is huge for Liverpool Football Club. Five players, mostly midfielders run out of their contract at the club. Loan signing Arthur Melo could fly back to Turin with only 13 minutes of action for the first team. Amid all of these concerns, a complete squad revamp is all but certain.
ECHO writes that amid calls for a squad shuffle, only 14 players at Liverpool have a ‘guaranteed’ role with the squad in the future. While you don’t need a lot of in-depth knowledge of the club to guess who these players might be, here is the list of players who are certain to have a ‘guaranteed’ future at Anfield.
Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson, Darwin Nunez, Stefan Bajcetic and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among the players who are straightaway assured to remain among the core players.
Notable players who miss out on that list are James Milner [out of contract in the summer], Joel Matip, Fabinho, Kostas Tsimikas, Calvin Ramsay, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho. This set of players comes in the grey area of not having a guaranteed role, but their situation is uncertain, to say the least.
What next for the club?
The players most likely to leave are Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino (departure confirmed), Adrian, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo. All these players run out of contract at the club in the summer. Moreover, the likes of Nathaniel Phillips and Caoimhin Kelleher also come under this category.
The Reds are now seven points behind the top four, with only 12 matches left to rescue their season and secure a spot in next year’s Champions League. They will then focus on rebuilding and ensuring that this period of transition only lasts for one year.
Liverpool should ideally be active in the transfer market during the summer, as they would want to aim at strengthening their midfield and bolster their squad options. Jurgen Klopp will be looking to bring in players who can obviously make an immediate impact and help the Reds reclaim their position among the top teams in England.
As such, the Reds will be expected to undergo a significant transformation during the upcoming transfer window. Klopp will be looking to add new talent to his squad as articulated earlier while also offloading players who no longer stand necessary for the team’s success.
