Injury boost for Liverpool as Manchester City star Phil Foden could miss clash against the Reds

After the recent news that Manchester City star Erling Haaland could potentially miss the league fixture against Liverpool at the Etihad, Phil Foden also sees himself out of the fixture against Jurgen Klopp’s side on April 1st. (h/t ECHO)

It is a psychological as well as a tactical boost for the Reds as Foden is a player who has always played extremely well against the Reds in the recent past. With Liverpool hoping to see Luis Diaz back from his injury layoff just in time to face Man City, the Cityzens seem to have their own problems to deal with.

Foden underwent surgery on Sunday, and will now miss Man City’s clash against Liverpool as he recovers from acute appendicitis. As far as Haaland is concerned, there is no clarity or confirmation on his injury status apart from the fact that he withdrew from the Norway squad due to an issue.

In any case, the Reds have their task cut out for them clearly. Whether or not they face a depleted Manchester City squad, the only thing that they should think about is flying back to Merseyside on the back of three points.

Foden doubt against the Reds

This season has not gone the Reds’ way one bit and we need to win each game from this point forward to ensure that we are in a strong position when it comes to the top-four scenario and qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

The Reds (sixth on the table) are presently seven points behind Tottenham who are in fourth place. We have two games in hand over the Londoners but so do Newcastle who find themselves in fifth place.

Without Foden, Liverpool’s defence will have one less headache to deal with. Jurgen Klopp’s side has already struggled defensively this season, conceding 29 goals in 26 Premier League games. The absence of a player like Foden, who can unlock defences with a moment of magic, will give Liverpool’s defence some breathing space.

While it’s undoubtedly disappointing for the neutrals to miss out on seeing one of the Premier League’s brightest talents in action, Liverpool fans will be relieved that Foden won’t be playing against them.

It remains to be seen how big a factor Foden’s absence will be, but for now, Liverpool will be quietly confident of their chances if we consider that even Haaland might miss out on featuring against the Reds.
