Liverpool star Cody Gakpo rejoins Netherlands camp
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has rejoined the Netherlands national team ahead of their upcoming match against Gibraltar, following his recent absence due to an illness outbreak within the squad. While he was unable to join the squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against France, Gakpo will be looking to make an impact in the upcoming match and prove his worth to the team. (h/t ECHO)
However, there is no clarity on whether or not the player could actually feature in the game against the rivals as naturally, Gakpo missed out on training the entire week. From Holland’s perspective, the matchup against Gibraltar will be extremely important as they lost their first game to France, and that by a heavy margin of 4 goals to nothing as well.
Newcastle defender Sven Botman, Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, Anderlecht goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman were the other players who sat out due to the illness outbreak four days ago.
The 23-year-old, since joining Liverpool from PSV in the January transfer window, looks to have adjusted to life in the Premier League after a tough few games. In 14 appearances for the Reds so far, he has four goals, two of them in a single game against Manchester United.
Gakpo return to action
Liverpool fans will no doubt be hoping that Gakpo can bring any momentum generated with the national team back to his club. With the Reds currently sitting in the sixth position in the Premier League table, every player’s contribution will be crucial in the coming weeks and months as they look to charge towards the top-four spots.
Of course, Gakpo will need to prove himself once again in order to earn a place in the Netherlands starting lineup again. The frontline was not particularly great against the Frenchmen, so there is a chance for Liverpool’s #18 to find himself starting against Gibraltar.
While his absence from the Euro 2024 qualifiers match against France was disappointing, he now has the opportunity to make a significant impact in the upcoming fixture against Gibraltar.
With his talent and determination, Gakpo will undoubtedly be looking to make the most of this opportunity and showcase his abilities on the international stage. This could be the first time that the player will don the national colours after his successful World Cup campaign which earned him a move to the Reds.
