Paul Joyce of the Times has revealed that Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara remains out of action as he is undergoing an individual programme following his hip complaint.

The Spaniard has been out of action for more than a month now when he pulled up injured before the Merseyside derby in early February.

Liverpool definitely missed his services during the two-legged Champions League tie against Real Madrid, which the Reds lost by 6-2 on aggregate.

Thiago has had an underwhelming availability record since signing for us in the summer of 2020. The former Bayern Munich star has missed 38 games in all competitions since the start of last season. That number will rise if he doesn’t get fit before the Manchester City game this Saturday.

Those are not great numbers for a player who is such an asset for this team when fit and playing regularly. Looking at that availability record, he has become more of a luxury player than one who can be relied upon to build a winning team around.

It seems like he will miss the City game at the least, which would be a shame because Liverpool are already without Stefan Bajcetic for the rest of this season. They could have done with either or both of the Spaniards fit for the remaining 12 league games.

Going back to Thiago, his contract at Anfield expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt). We all are aware that Jurgen Klopp is aiming for a squad overhaul this summer.

Does the German keep the 31-year-old when building his next team? Quality wise there are no doubts, but the lack of availability is a massive hindrance.
