Outgoing Liverpool Sporting Director Julian Ward ‘drops out’ of Ajax talks
Liverpool’s outgoing sporting director, Julian Ward has turned down the offer to become technical director at Ajax, stating that it is not the right time for him to make the move. Despite seeing himself strongly linked to the position, Ward decided against joining the Dutch giants, even after holding discussions with them.
The Athletic has reported that Ward intends to take a break from football at the end of the season. This news comes as a surprise to many Liverpool fans who were expecting Ward to continue his successful career at Merseyside, but instead, he announced his decision to leave back in November.
Ward has been an integral part of Liverpool’s recent success, having played a significant role in the recruitment of some of the club’s most successful players, such as Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk under the guidance of previous Sporting Director Michael Edwards.
Despite the setback, Liverpool fans can take solace in the fact that the club’s transfer strategy is in good hands. Michael Edwards, Ward’s predecessor, was instrumental in revolutionizing Liverpool’s recruitment, and Ward continued that success during his time at the club.
Who will come in for Ward?
The next person to take over the role will have big shoes to fill, but Liverpool’s recent success suggests that the club knows how to find the right person for the job.
As for Ward, his decision to take a break from football is understandable, given the pressure and demands of the job. After years of working in the highly competitive and intense world of football, it is not uncommon for individuals to take some time off to recharge and refocus.
The summer transfer window of 2023 will be extremely challenging for the Reds, but hopefully, Ward, before he heads out of the club, gifts us someone like Jude Bellingham, and end his career with the Reds on a high.
In an ideal situation, having Ward at the club beyond this season would have been great, but as a club, it is important for the people responsible to respect the decisions of individuals and think in terms of the bigger picture.
