Liverpool are no longer interested in signing Youri Tielemans

According to Football Insider via ECHO, Liverpool no longer share an interest in signing Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans at the end of the season when his contract expires (Transfermarkt). Contrary to other reports over a few months that spoke about how the Reds would actively want to get him on board in 2023, this latest news certainly comes as a shock.

While the fact that Tielemans would have been available on a free deal would certainly make things easy for Liverpool, it now seems like the Reds would rather pay up money to get their ideal transfer targets instead of hopping on the train to get a player just because he is a free agent.

Taking nothing away from Tielemans who is a fantastic player by all means, if the top management at Liverpool feels that the Reds could do with the services of other players, it might actually be the case. The 25-year-old Belgian international has four goals and one assist this season from 29 appearances across all competitions.

The news that the Reds do not want him is certainly a shocker. A primarily central midfielder who can put in more than a shift in other midfield roles as well could have been a great fit for the Reds who need young versatile midfielders at this stage more than any other time.

Do the Reds need Tielemans?

In 187 appearances for the Foxes across all competitions, he has 27 goals and 25 assists. A Premier League-proven player and an international starter for a strong European country like Belgium, there certainly will not come another opportunity for the Reds to get a player like him on board.

But hopefully, the Reds have bigger plans in mind. Like getting the likes of Jude Bellingham and/or Mason Mount into the club before the start of the next season. But the primary objective right now would be to get into the top-four spots to secure UCL football for next season.

Youri Tielemans has seen himself linked with a move to Liverpool for a very long time now.

Regardless of the reasons behind Liverpool’s decision, it is clear that Tielemans will be a highly sought-after free agent this summer. The 24-year-old has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is likely to attract interest from a number of top clubs.

Leicester will no doubt be hoping to tie Tielemans down to a new contract, but they may face stiff competition from other suitors. The Foxes will also be aware that they may need to start planning for life without Tielemans.
