Robert Lewandowski shares Liverpool chat he had with gaffer Jurgen Klopp
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has recently revealed that he had spoken to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about a potential move to Anfield in 2017. The conversation took place when Liverpool visited Munich to face Bayern in the Audi Cup that year.
Lewandowski said that Klopp asked him if he wanted to come to Liverpool during their meeting. He added that they both looked at each other before he laughed and stated that going to Liverpool was never on his mind.
Looking back, it is interesting to consider how Liverpool could have benefitted from signing a striker of Lewandowski’s calibre. The Reds obviously had a formidable attacking trio back then with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane but Lewa would offer something totally different to what Bobby would.
Speaking to Sport BILD, via Sport Witness (h/t ECHO), here is what Lewa had to say on his ‘Liverpool talk’ with Klopp:
“We hosted Liverpool FC with Bayern in the Audi Cup in Munich in 2017 We spoke on that occasion. Klopp asked me, ‘don’t you want to come to Liverpool?’ We looked at each other, then I laughed.”
“I don’t know if he was totally serious. But going to Liverpool was never in my mind.”
Lewa in Merseyside Red?
Lewandowski, who is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, could have provided the team with a goalscoring threat in addition to what Salah was doing back then. His exceptional form in front of goal over the past few seasons is evidence of his ability to consistently find the back of the net.
In addition to his goalscoring prowess, Lewandowski’s experience and leadership could have also been invaluable for Liverpool. The striker has won numerous titles throughout his career, and his winning mentality could have helped to motivate the team and push them towards success.
Klopp’s track record of developing strikers is well-documented, and it is possible that he could have taken Lewandowski’s game to even greater heights at Liverpool.
Despite the potential benefits, any move for Lewandowski would have been difficult, given the player’s status at Bayern and the likely cost of any transfer fee. The Reds would have also needed to convince the player to leave one of the biggest clubs in the world.

For now, Liverpool will be focusing on the future, as they look to improve their squad and challenge for major honours next season. This current campaign has been hugely disappointing and has put the chances of a UCL finish for the Reds on the line. Hopefully, we get through and again challenge for and win honours next season and beyond.
