Alisson Becker wants the team to show more of the desire they did against Arsenal
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker wants the team to show more of the desire they did to come back from two goals down and draw against Arsenal. He was also pleased with Thiago Alcantara’s return from injury.
After making a horrendous and mistake-laden start that allowed the Gunners to take a two-goal lead, the Reds started playing well around the 40th-minute mark and smashed Mikel Arteta’s team in the second half.
Had Aaron Ramsdale not been at his peak form, or Mohamed Salah not missed his penalty, Jurgen Klopp’s men would have clinched all three points despite being so poor in the opening 35 minutes.
Talking about the game, Alisson wants the team to learn from the mistakes but also take the positives into the coming games. Here’s what the Brazilian said (h/t Liverpool FC website):
“For what we did on the pitch, the chances we created, of course we go out here with a feeling that we could have won the match. But we have to be realistic; they started the match really well, scoring two goals.
“More than learn with the mistakes, we need to start to look as well to the positive things and take the good side – that is starting 2-0 down and then coming back to 2-2 and playing the game we played in the second half against the top of the league, against a great side.
“Thiago is back today as well, it was a great thing. Luis [Diaz] is close as well. Good to have those players back, they give power and strength for the team, and quality. We take these things and carry on.”
As for Thiago’s return, it will be immense. The Spanish midfielder has been sidelined for long durations ever since he arrived from Bayern Munich, but there is no question that he is our very best midfielder when fit and playing. The technique, defending, passing, shooting… you name it… that he possesses is always, always a plus point for us on and off the ball.
If we talk about the game, there must be mixed feelings among the Liverpool players. If they refer to the start they made, getting a point would be a relief. But, the way they played in the second half against the league leaders, they might think it is an opportunity to get the win.
That result puts the Reds 12 points behind the third and fourth-placed Newcastle United and Manchester United respectively. To finish in the top four, they have to win all of their games and hope either of the two Uniteds drops some points in the coming games.
With Manchester United’s participation in other competitions and the potential injury to Marcus Rashford, they might rotate a few players in the league games to win the cup ties. Despite all that, at this moment, Liverpool’s hopes of finishing fourth are slim. If we want to give the percentage, it would be around 1%.

That does not mean that the players stroll through the remaining nine games. They have done a lot already this season. The aim should be to win all the games, get to 71 points and hope that is enough to get fourth.
