“Performances against Torres”- Pundit says Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is ‘far better’ than Nemanja Vidic

Jamie Carragher puts Virgil van Dijk ahead of Nemanja Vidic in terms of quality

Jamie Carragher has defended Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk and claims that the Dutchman is better than former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic.

Van Dijk has had an underwhelming season, but the way his past performances have been forgotten by some so-called “football experts”, is baffling.

It also shows how shallow-minded people are when analysing a player’s performance. The Dutchman has had three absolutely sensational seasons, the latter one being after an ACL injury. Having one off-season is allowed to even the greatest of defenders.

Moreover, the former Southampton man is just 31 years old and should play for another 4-5 years at the top level. People need to watch him and then pass judgements when his career is done. Here’s what Carragher said replying to a tweet that was undermining van Dijk’s achievements in the game (h/t Mirror):

“VVD is far better than Vidic, who was a top CB, but have you forgot his performances against Torres?

“Rio and JT had poor seasons in their career like all players, VVD is having one now. No CB in the PL era has ever had VVD’s impact on a team.”

The problem with football fans is that some don’t want to accept greatness from a player who is not/has not played for the club they support. A lot of so-called “neutral fan football accounts” sound like former Manchester United or Chelsea supporters.

It is as if they assume that only United and Chelsea play in the Premier League. There is a reason why former Manchester City centre-back Vincent Kompany labels van Dijk as the best ever in the Premier League.

Having said all of that, the drop-off sustained this season should be a one-off for the Dutchman. After a normal summer break, he must come back fresh and get back to his elite levels next season.

Once he does that and helps Liverpool to a few more trophies in the next three seasons, there can’t be much debate about who the best ever is. Let’s hope he is ready for that challenge and comes back strong.
