Speaking to the media ahead of the Leeds United game (h/t BBC), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised the respectful silence observed by the Arsenal fans to commemorate the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster at Anfield last Sunday.
We have seen and heard classless clubs in the league sing derogatory songs as if to make fun of the people that lost their lives in a horrific incident that took place 34 years ago (hear hear Chelsea, Manchester City fans, etc).
But, when it was time to observe a minute’s silence before the Liverpool-Arsenal game last Sunday, the Gunners fans were respectful of that and did that magnificently. Although it is the least a fan base coming to Anfield on this occasion must do, the standards are so low these days that this act was heartening to see.
Here’s what Klopp on the Arsenal fans (h/t BBC):
“It was probably the most respectful minute of silence I have ever witnessed. There was absolutely no noise apart from a little baby. That you could hear the baby showed how silent it was.”
Given how classless City and their fans have been even though their trophies have been questioned of corruption, it would be just right if Arsenal pip them to the title this season.
Moving on, it is an important game away at Leeds for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. With the top four looking out of sight at the moment, all they can do is win the remaining nine games and hope that is enough to sneak into fourth.
If we are looking at the discouraging part, Liverpool haven’t won four league games in a row for once this season. So, expecting them to now put in a run of nine wins is a bit unrealistic.
Having said that, the return of Luis Diaz for this game and Thiago Alcantara last week definitely adds substance and sustained quality to the team. Will that motivate the team up to perform better than they have been? We hope so.
