Liverpool handed Mason Mount boost after Chelsea’s Champions League exit
Following Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter-finals, in a crazy domino effect, Liverpool have been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Mason Mount. As suggested by Football.London, Chelsea’s players now could be forced to take up to a 30% pay cut because of the UCL elimination.
With Mount and Chelsea not in agreement over a newly revised contract with better pay, the 30% cut will further put the Blues into a dicey situation when it comes to this particular contract dilemma. His current deal expires in 2024 (Transfermarkt).
Enter Liverpool, who could potentially match Mount’s demands. A number of players stand set to leave the club in the summer which would ease the salary budget by a significant amount. The Reds could probably afford to pay Mount what he wants given we also sit extremely desperate for a midfielder over the summer.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are among the midfielders almost certain to depart the club in the summer with no clarity over James Milner’s future just yet. At this moment, a workhorse like Mount would fit into Jurgen Klopp’s system like a glove.
Pressure Mounting on Chelsea?
Moreover, Chelsea spending heavily on players in both transfer windows of the season puts them into a tougher situation when it comes to FFP conditions. They could stand cornered to part ways with Mount, which is a great boost for Liverpool on all fronts.
Chelsea would demand a fee of about £80m or thereabouts to let go of Mount, but there is a belief that the Reds could negotiate a better deal for the player.
In any case, we need to spend heavily on the squad, and money should be the least of the issues for Liverpool.
FSG certainly need to understand the depth of the situation and help Jurgen Klopp and his team out in terms of financial support.

Following the drop-off in the race for Jude Bellingham, Mount should be our ‘primary’ transfer target and the Reds should leave no stones unturned in their pursuit of the 24-year-old Englishman.
