LFC Transfer News: Liverpool prepare bid for Perr Schuurs as ‘ideal Virgil van Dijk colleague’

Liverpool are seemingly targeting Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs as ‘an ideal colleague for Virgil van Dijk‘.

This is according to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), who state that Newcastle United, along with Liverpool, are readying an offer for the Dutch centre-back.

The Reds currently have Van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as their first-team centre-back options. Let’s not count Fabinho Tavares in that role for now.

He has only ever been a makeshift centre-back. Out of the four names above, Matip and Gomez have been wildly inconsistent with injuries. Konate has had his fair share of fitness problems too.

Smart move?

Van Dijk and Matip are both in their 30s and there could come a time when we have to start planning for life without them. Schuurs, 23, could be a very smart signing for us in that regard.

He can learn from the best in the game, Virgil van Dijk, and potentially become his compatriot’s long-term successor here at Anfield. Ajax Amsterdam are giants in the Netherlands.

A quality player rarely ever leaves them in the best years of their career if it isn’t for a club that are markedly bigger than them and are competing for titles regularly. Schuurs’ move to Torino from Ajax last summer was an anomaly in that regard.

A big move is arguably still pending for the Dutchman if he wants to realise his full potential. Torino are 11th in the table and are historically not as big as Liverpool. It’s not a question that the Reds are a bigger team than them.

Let’s just hope we can beat the Magpies to Schuurs because they are a team on the up and could look to offer him something we can’t – immediate playing time.
