Jurgen Klopp praises the performance of Trent Alexander-Arnold in West Ham win
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was left amazed by some of the things Trent Alexander-Arnold did during the 2-1 win over West Ham United.
After making a decent start to the game possession-wise, the Reds were pegged back with a delightful goal from Lucas Paqueta. Cody Gakpo responded for us six minutes later with an accurate strike from a distance to level things up. Alexander-Arnold’s pass to the Dutchman between the lines was sumptuous in the build-up.
Once the equaliser went in, Klopp’s men took over the dominance but could not create clear-cut opportunities. West Ham scored early in the second half through Jarrod Bowen, only for it to get chalked off for offside.
Joel Matip scored a bullet header from an Andrew Robertson corner in what turned out to be the winning goal. Here’s what Klopp said after the game about the performance of Alexander-Arnold and more (h/t BT Sport Interview):
“The stuff Trent did tonight, wow, absolutely insane. The goal Cody scored – come on. What a screamer!
“It is a tough program for all of us the last few weeks of the season. We will see how we end up. We don’t think about the Champions League too much. We wasted a bit of time during the season but now we are in a better mood.
“We have to finish the season as good as somehow possible.”
This hard-fought win takes us to within six points of Newcastle United and Manchester United, who are currently occupying the third and fourth place in the table respectively. Both teams have away games on Thursday against Everton and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.
Although Liverpool might have started winning games a bit later in the season, what it could do is increase pressure on the two teams who are in the top four currently.
If the Reds continue to win in the next week or so, Newcastle and United would be obliged to keep winning, otherwise, the gap will be closed down significantly.

It is three league wins in a row for Klopp’s men, the first time they have done it in one stretch this season. It is also two successive away wins in the Premier League, something that hasn’t happened at all since the end of last season. Maybe we are picking up momentum at the right time!
