Noel Gallagher claims that Liverpool were far better than Arsenal against Manchester City
Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher claims that Liverpool were a better opponent to Manchester City compared to what Arsenal have dished out.
City smashed the Gunners 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to go only two points behind the north London side, with two games in hand. Pep Guardiola’s men won the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium as well.
Although Arsenal have led the league for a long period of time, it never felt like the closely-fought title race we have been accustomed to seeing between Liverpool and City in the last four years. If anything, the game on Wednesday showcased that the Gunners have a lot of work to do.
Gallagher echoed those thoughts and said this (h/t via Talksport, h/t Liverpool Echo):
“As soon as the game kicked off, I was expecting Arsenal to fly out the blocks.
“I was expecting them to give Ederson no time on the ball. They were stood there as we were kicking it around the six-yard box.
“After we went 1-0 up, I said to the guy next to me that the only way we don’t win this is if we get bored. We were just knocking it around. Arsenal had to win that game.
“None of us particularly like Liverpool, but when they come here, they play like champions, and it’s life or death. They give it their all, and the fans give it their all. Arsenal have been giving it the big ‘un for the last few weeks, and they did nothing.”
As much as we don’t really like a City fan, Gallagher is right in what he is saying here. The competitive edge and rivalry between Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp was something else. It was also because the latter has had an excellent record against the former over a long period of time.
Even in this season, where Liverpool have been mediocre, we managed to beat City at Anfield in a game that would be remembered more than the one played on Wednesday.
We can only hope that Klopp gets the necessary backing in the summer window to get his team back to where they were with regards to challenging City for the biggest honours.
Given how well we have played in the last four games, including that comeback against Arsenal, it shows that a good summer window may lead to us getting closer to Guardiola’s men than anyone would imagine.
