Chris Sutton feels the Liverpool style of play would suit Tottenham

Football pundit Chris Sutton feels the Liverpool style of play may suit Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the league clash at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds go into this game after winning their last three and gaining some confidence. Spurs, on the other hand, showed guts and spirit on Thursday to come back from two goals down and level against Manchester United.

Although both teams are in the race for a top-four finish, the chances of making it is slim. Even if Liverpool win all of their remaining games, it is not in their hands to breach that mark.

Coming back to the game, here’s what Sutton said about Tottenham being suited to the Reds’ style of play (h/t BBC Sport):

“In some ways, Liverpool’s approach will suit Tottenham because Jurgen Klopp’s side will dominate the ball and Trent Alexander-Arnold will leave gaps behind him when he goes into the centre of midfield, as he does in his new inverted role.

“Spurs showed a bit of character to fight back for a draw against Manchester United but I really can’t back them to get anything here because they have been so disappointing all season.

“Liverpool are on a roll with three successive wins and they still want a top-four spot.To have any chance of that, the Reds need to win every game they have left – and even that probably won’t be enough.”

As underwhelming as Liverpool’s season has been, they have been pretty good at home. We have seen them beat both the Manchester sides and should have done the same to Arsenal, had Aaron Ramsdale not been in inspired form, or maybe had Mohamed Salah not missed his penalty.

Match that with Spurs’ inconsistency throughout the campaign, the signs are that Jurgen Klopp’s men should win this game.

But, things are not that easy in football, especially when you look at what Liverpool can do to undo the good work. The counter-attacking threat of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son is something that needs to be kept an eye on.

As mentioned above, the ticket to next season’s Champions League is not in their hands even by winning all of the games. The best they can hope for is finishing fifth, which directs them to the group stage of the Europa League.

Keeping this season in mind, getting even that should be a boost. The team is slowly gelling well and a good pre-season may spur them on for greater things from August onwards.
