Fabinho on the best passer in the team and thoughts on the new system
Liverpool midfield Fabinho reveals that Trent Alexander-Arnold is the passer in the team and shared his thoughts on the new system.
Since the start of the Arsenal game, we are seeing a slight tweak in the system from Jurgen Klopp where Alexander-Arnold joins Fabinho in defensive midfield when the team is in possession. The out-of-possession system remains the same with the right-back going back to his original position.
We are witnessing that to be working at the moment. The comeback against the Gunners was great, followed up by three consecutive wins (two of them being away from home).
Talking about Alexander-Arnold being the best passer in the team and the new system, here’s Fabinho (h/t Liverpool website):
“Trent, we all know his quality. I’ve said it before, even when he plays right-back, he likes to drop a little bit to receive the ball in a similar position and try to pass the ball because he’s maybe the best passer in the team. Now he’s in this position more and I think he really enjoys being in this position, like having more of the ball and being more important in this part of the pitch.
“We changed some things in our system. Now with Trent when we have the ball, he goes a little bit more inside next to me and I think it worked really well for us. He’s a really good player on the ball. Me and him, I think we are doing well, we understand each other. I think the team is playing really well at the moment and we just have to keep this momentum and keep playing good and winning games.”
What this tweak has done is allowed Liverpool to have defensive protection in the midfield when the team loses possession in the final third. It also allows Fabinho to be front-footed with his counter-pressing, something we were used to seeing from him until last season.
The new system has markedly unlocked Alexander-Arnold after the season he has had. Klopp is now able to make the very best use of the 24-year-old. In terms of passing, creating chances and being strong in counter-pressing as one package, there are not many better than Trent.
All we can hope for is that the players continue to adapt to this change and win the remaining games to give them some chance of finishing in the top four.
Once the season is done, the manager can run this system over and over again during the pre-season, so that every player in the squad knows their role to a T.
