Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could not believe what he was seeing when Tottenham Hotspur were getting ripped apart by Newcastle United last week.
The German thought that the score-line after the 20 minutes (which was 5-0 in favour of the Magpies) was a joke on the TV screen.
As it turns out Jurgen, it happened in real life. Spurs were that abject in their previous away league game. The consequences of that have been known to us with Cristian Stellini getting sacked
and Ryan Mason getting the interim role. Here’s what Klopp said about that game before facing the North London opponents in a crunch game on Sunday evening (h/t Independent):
“I came home, switched the TV on it was 1-0. I had something else to do and wanted to watch the game a bit later and when I came back and it was 5-0.
“I honestly thought there was something wrong with the screen. Somebody had made a joke or something.”
There is a reason why Newcastle are third in the table and looking strong to play Champions League football next season. They are also one of the reasons why both Liverpool and Tottenham are probably vying for fifth spot. Manchester United look certain to secure the fourth spot for themselves.
Having seen Spurs’ fragility away from home, the Reds might be licking their lips to get another win at Anfield.
But, nothing is cut and dry in football. Klopp’s men have been inconsistent as well, hence we cannot definitely say that they would romp past Spurs on Sunday.
Having won their last three games (two of which were away from home), some bits of confidence are returning to the Liverpool camp. We can hope that they use that for the remaining six games and win them all.
Although the top-four race is not in their hands, they must keep winning to put any sort of pressure on United and Newcastle. That would also consequently secure fifth place in the table, which gives the ticket to the group stage of the Europa League.
