Jurgen Klopp on meeting with John W Henry and transfer plans for the summer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp talked about having a good conversation with owner John W Henry and not making wholesale additions in the summer.

The German gave us an example of Chelsea struggling to cope this season having made 15 signings in the last two transfer windows. While he knows the Blues will come back stronger next season, the blueprint is there to not just buy players for the sake of it.

We know that Liverpool could do with a midfield reshuffle and maybe an addition in the back-line to potentially go back to where they were last season. After pulling out of the Jude Bellingham deal because the club’s recruitment department wants to spread out the money spent on various players, the pressure is on them to make the right decisions this summer.

Here’s what Klopp said about meeting Henry, summer transfer plans and the Chelsea example (h/t Sky Sports, via Liverpool Echo):

“We have a really good relationship and he is a really good guy who cares a lot about us and we will do business. I don’t understand, football is crazy – it was always crazy – but everybody expects ‘OK Liverpool is not doing well, so they need five, six or seven players bringing in’.

“Chelsea will be fine in the end and they will be incredibly strong next year, but I’m using them just as an example. At the highest level, no, we cannot do it like that. And that’s what we will not do.

“You have to bring in the right players and build a new team. This team wrote a sensational story and now we start a new one, that’s it. How many players? We will see. We will see.”

Had Liverpool signed a proper midfielder last summer, we would not even be having this discussion of whether they need two or three new midfielders this time around.

It is because of the planning failure last year that we are talking about signing three players in one department and creating a new team there.

Either way, we hope that Klopp and his staff have learnt from their mistakes and won’t repeat them going forward. They might know by now that every move in the summer window has to work if they are to challenge clubs like Manchester City with unlimited resources and corrupted backgrounds.

Before that, the focus should be on winning the remaining league games and hoping that it gets us to fourth position in the table.
