Cody Gakpo keen on impressing where needed for Liverpool
Cody Gakpo is enjoying his time at Liverpool while playing in different positions and wants the team to continue the current winning run.
The Reds have won their last six league games, which is somewhat of an anomaly compared to what we have witnessed throughout the course of this season.
Gakpo, who started his Liverpool career on the left wing, has seemingly settled himself well in that false nine role. However, Jurgen Klopp played him on the right-hand side of a midfield three against Brentford on Saturday.
Here’s what the Dutchman said about playing in different positions and wanting to end this season on a high (h/t Liverpool website):
“I enjoy playing for sure and I’m looking where I can help the team the most.
“Sometimes that’s a little bit deeper in the midfield and sometimes it’s in the striker’s position. I just enjoy playing with my teammates, and especially when you win it is way more fun!
“It’s a great feeling [to win six games in a row] but the season isn’t over yet.
“I think we just have to stay focused, keep working hard and try to win the last three as well. I’m really happy with the win and looking forward to the next game already.”
After a stuttering start following his January move from PSV Eindhoven, Cody Gakpo has got six goals and two assists in 18 league appearances. Those are decent numbers for a player who is yet to have a pre-season with the squad and the management staff.
Although Klopp played him in midfield on Saturday, it feels like the 24-year-old is suited to operating as a false nine, something Roberto Firmino expertise in. Now, with the latter leaving in the summer, the Dutchman can take over that role.
Talking about the winning run, it was important for the team to show up and believe in themselves that they can win games of football on a trot. Doing it at the business end of a season will not just help them in making a late push for a top-four finish, but also use the momentum to start the next campaign on a positive note.

There is a lot to admire about Liverpool, Klopp and the players in what they have done in the past three weeks. After the Manchester City defeat, it felt like everyone will be on the beach with a focus on next season. But, this team is made of something else. They were pushed to the corner yet they come out fighting, albeit with a weak punch due to the midfield age.
