“He has accepted the role”- Fabrizio Romano provides update on Liverpool FC’s pursuit of 59-year-old sporting director

Liverpool FC’s pursuit of a bunch of midfielders added to the club’s search for a new sporting director after Julian Ward’s decision to depart from the club at the end of the season has reached a positive turn.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are now close to appointing Jorg Schmadtke as the new sporting director. The former Wolfsburg managing director has apparently, “accepted the role” at Merseyside, and would play an extremely crucial role in helping the Reds through their transition period.

The Reds’ desperation for a new player in the middle of the park reached its heights earlier this season amid extremely poor form and criticism of Jurgen Klopp and his style of play in a few of the games. Plus the impending departure of the likes of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita makes things even tougher to handle than they already are.

As Liverpool look to bounce back from a challenging season, the potential appointment of Schmadtke could go very well. He will work on the project and new signings together with Jurgen Klopp, who will naturally remain crucial in the transfer strategy.

Liverpool inching closer to appointing Schmadtke

This means that Liverpool is not only focused on the short-term but also has a long-term plan to rebuild the team. The likes of Mason Mount, Matheus Nunes and Nicolo Barella see themselves linked with the Reds in recent weeks, and hopefully, we get our hands on at least two of those three.

The owners, FSG, need to certainly flex their financial strengths in the summer window this summer or else the going could get really tough for the club. We have somehow managed with tight budgets under a world-class manager like Klopp, but given he also would not stay at the club beyond 2026, the owners need to introspect their modus operandi as well.

With his experience and knowledge, Jorg Schmadtke could stand as the right man for the job, and fans will undoubtedly be excited to see what he can achieve alongside Jurgen Klopp.

This is a very crucial time for Liverpool, and there is no doubt that they will be looking to make more positive changes in the coming months.
