Aston Villa ‘interested’ in Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio amidst Liverpool links

Premier League rivals Aston Villa are ‘interested’ in Real Madrid star Marco Asensio amidst links to Liverpool, according to a report via the Liverpool Echo.

At the moment, the Spain international is in the final months of his deal at Los Blancos and is set to become a free agent next summer. As a result, a number of teams will be eyeing the attacker’s signature.

The Reds have been associated with acquiring the forward’s services for some time now. However, the Villans are willing to offer the 27-year-old a ‘lucrative contract’ and continue to ‘monitor the situation closely’.

Since Unai Emery’s appointment, the Lions have been one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League. Under Steven Gerrard, the Villa Park side were in a relegation battle. But the former Arsenal manager has them fighting to get into a European competition.

Ollie Watkins has been inspiring for Villa this season, especially in the last few months. The Villans also have the likes of Leon Bailey, Coutinho and Emiliano Beundia in their ranks.

Initially, Asensio was expected to be the next big star at Madrid. However, injuries have hampered the Spaniard’s development over the years. But the 27-year-old still possesses a lot of quality.

Liverpool’s attack has relied on Mohamed Salah in the current campaign after Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich last summer. The likes of Roberto Firmino, Diogo Dalot and Luis Diaz have been in and out of the team due to injuries.

On the other hand, the new signings Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are yet to seemingly find their feet at the Anfield side. The Uruguay international has been a bit underwhelming in his debut season in England.

However, for now, we evidently have more pressing areas on the pitch to bolster, like the midfield and defence. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Reds will challenge Villa in the race for Asensio.
