Jurgen Klopp admits it will take an extraordinary offer for Liverpool to sell Caoimhin Kelleher next summer

According to the club’s official site, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that reserve goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will only depart next summer if an extraordinary offer is made for his services.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds from the Irish side Ringmahon Rangers in 2015 and steadily rose through the ranks. Largely used as the second-choice custodian, Kelleher has stepped up more often than not and is a reliable option off the bench when needed.

It can be argued that the Irish international is good enough to be a starter for most Premier League sides, several of who need a new goalkeeper. While Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a summer bid, Klopp believes the player is going nowhere.

While Klopp did not expressly dismiss a summer departure, he was more than candid in admitting that Liverpool will not let Kelleher go for cheap. Whether any team can fork out what we want for him remains to be seen.

“I can’t see… honestly, I can’t see Caoimh leaving. It must be an extraordinary offer that I start thinking, I have to say.”

With Alisson Becker the number one at Anfield, it is difficult to see Kelleher usurping the number one spot anytime soon. The Brazilian is arguably the best goalkeeper in world football and the Reds are blessed to have two reliable shot-stoppers in their squad.

More so, Kelleher is also a home-grown player, something Liverpool are sorely lacking at this moment in time. That tally will go down further once Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner leave the club in the summer.

The Irishman is held in high regard at Anfield and starred in the club’s 2022 Carabao Cup win. He was the hero in the final and ensured he got himself a spot at Kirkby’s goalkeeping hall of fame. Solid in goal and good with the ball at his feet, Liverpool could not have asked for a better reserve goalie.

Staying at Liverpool means Kelleher will have to continue playing second fiddle to Alisson. He is likely to get the nod for Cup games next season and maybe even the Europa League fixtures should we finish fifth.
