Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that they will be looking to bolster every department in the squad in the summer window, apart from maybe the goalkeeper.
Klopp has also claimed that the summer plans won’t change because there has been a recent improvement in performance levels and overall form.
With the goalkeeper comment, it looks unlikely that Caoimhin Kelleher will leave the club this summer despite him being linked with a few Premier League clubs, as per Irish Independent.
Here’s what the boss said about the transfer plans for the summer (h/t Mirror):
“We look in all departments apart from goalkeeper at the moment.
“Yes, if there is a good [defender] out there, I would not deny it. That’s all. We look at all areas of the pitch, definitely.”
Forgetting what has happened in the last seven games, let’s remember that four squad players will be leaving the club for free in the summer – Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
While Liverpool have spent good money in buying three forwards in the last 18 months, it is high time that the investment is focused towards bolstering the midfield and defensive department.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold doing well in midfield and Curtis Jones showing what he is capable of in the last month or so, there might be a case for the Reds to only sign two midfielders but supplement that with a couple of defensive signings.
The hope is that whichever players are in the target zone for Klopp and his staff, the signings are made as early as possible in the transfer window so that the new players join the squad from the first day of the pre-season.
Once that happens, the settling-in period at the start of next season would feel easier. Dragging transfer races does not help anyone.
