Liverpool will face competition from Arsenal for the signature of Mason Mount
As per the Athletic (subscription required) (h/t Liverpool Echo), Arsenal are set to rival Liverpool in the race to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount in the summer window.
The Gunners under Mikel Arteta are keen on signing both Declan Rice and Mount as they seek to bolster the midfield department following the expected departure of Granit Xhaka.
If the talk of a midfield bolster arrives, Liverpool’s name have been on top of the list in the past few weeks and months. The Reds must sign multiple midfielders in the summer window to fare better next season.
Mount has been one of their targets for some time now. The Chelsea star has entered the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and it is highly unlikely that he signs an extension with them.
The England international is a versatile midfield player who can operate on the wing or as a false nine. In the new Jurgen Klopp system, he can fit in well as a right-sided wide midfielder with Trent Alexander-Arnold tucking in right-back. This is all if only Liverpool manage to sign the 24-year-old.
If Arsenal make a substantial offer, two things stand out in their favour – the player does not have to change cities and the fact that the Gunners can offer Champions League next season, unlike Liverpool.
If the changing city is an issue for Mount and he wants to play for Arteta, then nothing can be done. But, if he is short-sighted enough to only play for a club that participates in the Champions League, it does not bode well for his future mentality.

One would doubt that the latter will be the case with him. The 24-year-old should come to Anfield and become a midfield star here. Klopp has it in him to make the best use of the Englishman.
